Noah can not be around any kind of smoke. Smoke is a BIG trigger of asthma for Noah. If Noah is around it, it can mean ER & Steroids. We try to let the use of Steroids because of the side effects.
Noah had to spend the night in the house. He just made friends on our street that he goes to school with. He loves to ride his bike with them. I could not take the risk. Tonight Noah was able to go outside to play. No burning!
I wish people would realize what their actions can do to other people. Burning wood, etc from your yard is not healthy for you to breathe it in, but for a person with asthma, it can be an ER visit. You need to think about others. We have a burning ordinance, which states that you can burn between the hours of 6-12p & 4-9p.
"Asthma affects nearly five million children in the United States and is the cause of almost 3 million physician visits and 200,000 hospitalizations each year."- AANMA.
That is too many children with asthma. I keep thinking about the children's parents. Getting the diagnosis of asthma can be so hard to handle at first. Each time your child has an asthma attack, you could feel lost. Am I doing this right? Should I do this instead? Normal feelings for parents with asthmatics. I will do everything we can to help both of our boys with their asthma.
I keep an asthma journal for my boys. It helps so much when I take them to the doctors. I know how much of the medications I gave them. Like with Noah, I know when/how many times he had his fast acting inhaler. I also note how he is. Was he pale? Cranky? Sometimes I note what it is like outside. What is the temp outside? What was Noah doing when the attack happen? All of this is important. It helps me stay calm for the next asthma attack.
Noah is always bad in September/October. We are okay right now, but that can change in a minute.

Thanks so much for your comments on my blog post, what's in a name? I love hearing from other moms who have walked in these shoes.
ReplyDeleteI did not realize that smoke outside from a burn could affect someone with asthma that much. I'm happy that I do so I can be more aware.
I loved your back to school post. I'm just getting ready to do a post about our family home organization binder. It is awesome to have everything in one place.
I look forward to following your family's story.
