Disease Awareness #7- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

For my seventh Disease Awareness, I chose Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which is "affects the brain and spinal cord. Early MS symptoms include weakness, tingling, numbness, and blurred vision. Other signs are muscle stiffness, thinking problems, and urinary problems. Treatment can relieve MS symptoms and delay disease progression."  Awareness Day for MS is May 29.

I chose MS because of a friend, Michele, that lives with it daily.  Michele also lives with another disease, Syringomelia, which is my next Disease Awareness.  I have never heard of Syringomelia until Michele told me about it.  Learning about different diseases helps raise awareness.  Each disease need awareness so they can raise funds for research.

MS "is a potentially debilitating disease in which your body's immune system eats away at the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves. Damage to myelin causes interference in the communication between your brain, spinal cord and other areas of your body. This condition may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that's not reversible."
With my daughter's disease, HSP, I have heard a lot about myelin.  Ashleigh has issues with the myelin being normal.

Symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary, depending on the location of affected nerve fibers. Multiple sclerosis symptoms may include:
-Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs
-Partial or complete loss of central vision, usually in one eye, often with pain during eye movement (optic neuritis)
-Double vision or blurring of vision
-Tingling or pain in parts of your body
-Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain head movements
-Tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
-Slurred speech
-Fatigue
-Dizziness

If you have a disease that I have not written about and you want me to, please let me know.  If you want to write it yourself, I would be happy to post it.

Melissa
If you think you have any symptoms of MS, remember I am not a doctor.  Please see your doctor.
