I love this Parent+ Child + Reading= Our Club Post! Great idea! I think I already you told all that the boys & I read every Wednesday night. It is our reading night. Some weeks we do it more than once. Others it is just Wednesday. Wednesdays were chosen for a reason. It is the only night that Shawn is at work since he is daylight the other 4 days.
Back to this blog, I love the photo of her 2 kids reading on the floor. I wish Ashleigh would join us, but we tried. It is not pretty. Noah does not get along with her & she does not get along with him. It has to do with her behavior. Rebecca reminded me that I need to take my kids to the library. We have been in our new house since Dec 26 & we have not been to the library. I need to schedule a trip.
The following is from the Parent+ Child + Reading= Our Club Post. Noah & I talked about this tonight during our reading night. We want to read The 39 Clues books together. Plus any books on Siberian Huskies. We will add books later on. We will have our Reading Nights with Ethan on Wednesday nights, but for this Book Club Reading Night will be on Thursday Nights. This Thursday night is only Noah & I. No Ethan or Ashleigh. Noah is all happy. No computer, cells, or ipads! We do at times do a review on what we read so that is ok to have a computer/laptop.
I was trying to put this below what she said, but I lose the order of the numbers so my is below.

Ideas to Start a Book Club with your Children:
- Brainstorm and come up with a list of books you’d like to read together. Think of books you enjoyed reading as a child. Tackle a suggested reading list (libraries are great resources for this). Don’t dismiss any books your children suggest. You may be pleasantly surprised at how excellent some new children’s books are. Plus it will give you terrific insight as to what your child likes to read.
- Set aside time to read – Make a plan to read together or finish a book by a certain date.
- Create one-on-one time to have your discussion. Make it just about you and your child and take away any distractions. Take them to the park on a sunny day, out for an ice cream sundae – make it a special time.
- Ask leading questions to facilitate discussion: “Who was your favorite character? Why?” “ What did you like most?” “How did it make you feel when she said XYZ?” Think of specific themes that occurred in the book and discuss them. Also, there are many websites that have questions for many popular children’s books.
- Have an incentive or challenge for you both to meet. Once my daughter & I have read 5 books together, we are going to dinner and movie – her choice. Come up with a goal and a prize together and stick with it.
- Enjoy the quality discussion with your child. Learn from them.
I was trying to put this below what she said, but I lose the order of the numbers so my is here.
1.Noah & I both have a Goodreads account. We have a to be read list. When we see a book we want to read we add it to either my or Noah's then we add it to the opposite. Then, we know where to go to look at the books on our list.
2. We set time a side each week to read.
3. We will be starting this soon. Noah & Ashleigh needs this time with each Shawn & I. At least twice a month.
4. After we read, we talk about what we have read.
5. I have never thought about this.
6. We do enjoy this.
Keep Reading! We will! Tomorrow night Noah & I are back to reading the first 39 clues. What are you reading?
Melissa
