Happy Birthday Dr Seuss!!
Each year I look forward to Dr Seuss' birthday, which is March 2. His birthday has been adopted as the Read Across America Day & is "the largest reading event in our nation"(link). Dr Seuss was born as Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr Seuss wrote And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which came from his hometown & less than a mile from his childhood home on Fairfield Street. This book was rejected 27 times. He went to a College in Oxford to get his Doctorate, but he got married to his wife in 1927 & returned to the US without getting his degree. He wrote Horton Hatches the Egg in 1940 before the US entered World War II. After the war, Dr Seuss wrote Horton Hears a Who, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, & Green Eggs & Ham to name a few. Dr Seuss died of throat cancer on September 24, 1991.
