Disease Awareness #4 - Celiac Disease

Living with Celiac Disease has changed my life.  Celiac Awareness Day is September 13.  Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease and is not an allergy to gluten.  When we eat gluten, our immune systems responds by creating antibodies that attack the small intestine, which will damage the villi and the nutrients can not be absorbed into the body.  Celiac disease is hereditary.

Statistics
1 in 22 people with a first-degree relative with celiac disease (parent, child, sibling) have celiac disease.
1 in 39 people with a second-degree relative with celiac disease (aunt, uncle, cousin) have it too.
