This is with the boys!! The first book we read is "I am Small" by Emma Dodd. I read this to my boys tonight. My youngest, Ethan, got this for Christmas. Noah taught Ethan to read the words "I am small" when were were at that point on the page. Ethan pointed to the small penguin & said "that is me." The entire book Ethan kept saying that. He also had to point out which penguin was Noah, Daddy, Ashleigh, & me. This will be a book that Ethan will want to be read over & over again. He wanted it again after we were done, but we read another Penguin book. Cute book for any kid!
Noah received "Pierre the Penguin" by Jean Marzollo for Christmas. It is based on a true story. This is about an African penguin named Pierre, who loses all of his feathers. Noah read this book tonight to Ethan & I. I helped him with words he did not know. It is a good book. I think it teaches a child that no matter what you can do anything. Here is an article that shows this. Within 6 weeks, Pierre was back in the water swimming with his friends.
A little information about African Penguins:
"Penguins are "waterproof" because of the small muscles found at the base of their feathers used to bind the feathers tightly to the body and because their feathers are waterproofed by a waxy substance. The wax is distributed from the base of the tail to the tips of the feathers as the penguins preen
. Their feather muscles used to grip the feathers to the body are also used to hold their feathers out so that a warming layer of air can be trapped between their body and the feathers. African penguins have developed unique adaptations to life in the temperate zone
. They limit their daylight activities at breeding sites on land to early morning and early evenings to avoid too much sun. They also build their nests where there is protection against too much solar radiation. Penguins that are not breeding typically spend the entire day in the ocean or, they stay on the beach in large groups and swim frequently to stay cool." (From this site)
This book reminds me of Winter of "Dolphin Tale." Winter is a dolphin, who lost her tale & those who was helped her found a way to get her swimming with an artificial fin. Like Pierre, Winter was so determined to do anything. Both are good books to read with your child(ren). If you have a child with special needs, I recommend both of these books, "Pierre the Penguin" & "Dolphin Tale." I would recommend these books to any kids. We have not read "Dolphin Tale" yet, but we saw the movie & the book is on our list to read. I wonder if they will make a movie out of "Pierre the Penguin." Hint Hint!! I have 2 boys that love penguins. They adore penguins!!
Here are 2 African Penguin coloring pages: (I need to add it)
