Day 17: Joy

I watched my daughter get out of our van and walk into our Senior High School all on her own.  She did not want me to walk her into the school.  I had to drop her off at 6p because she had rehearsal for a concert her and many others were invited to be a part of.

Noah & I left.  We did not have to be back until 7:30p for the Concert so we went to my friend's house to get their daughter, who Ashleigh loves.  The girls are 10 days a part and grew up like cousins.  Noah, Ashleigh, & Ethan all say they are cousins.

There was 3 different groups singing.  Ashleigh's group was last.  I started worrying when I saw all of the kids in the audience going up to the stage.  I was worried that Ashleigh would be pushed over and fall.  I was worried that she could not do the stairs to get onto the stage, but everything worked out.  Her music teacher helped her.  Then, I was worried about the noise and the noise and the crowdedness of the stage would do to her, but there stood my daughter.  I think I could see her doing her breathing technique.  Ash was remaining calm.  Then, they sang.  Beautifully!  I stopped worrying.

When the concert was over, Ashleigh walked over to where Noah, Mary, & I were sitting.  When Ashleigh walked up on stage, I made sure she knew where we were.  We had a surprise for her.  Ash had no idea that Mary was coming with us.  When Noah & I dropped her off, neither did we.

I learned something this night.  I learned I need to let go.  I need to let Ashleigh become that young lady without me so close to her side.  I know at 14 Ash still needs me and her dad, but not so close.

I felt joy and proud for Ashleigh doing this concert.  She was asked to join.  Some of her classmates said no.  Ashleigh loves to sing.  She choose her love for singing over any fear she had.  The blessing in all of this is Ashleigh did this all on her own.  Over the years, I have worried that Ashleigh would not do things she loved, that she would be afraid to do things due to her walking.
