Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I had my first mammogram at the age of 38.  I was at an appointment looking at a magazine.  I think it was Better Homes & Gardens.  There was an article about breast cancer.  I just got this feeling like I need to get my first mammogram.  I did later that month.  3 lumps were found.  I was given the option of waiting and getting another mammogram in a few months or to get a biopsy.  I could not wait and see so I did the biopsy.  Everything was benign.  I was getting new scans every 6 months.  I finally get rid of the scans and a new problem came up.  Discharge in the problem breast!  I had a mammogram and I was told that I needed to see a breast surgeon because she (the radiologist) could not come up with a reason.  I saw the breast surgeon and I had to have more tests.  I got the results from a new radiologist and she told me that I have a blocked duct and would need surgery.  I had another biopsy because there was a new type of tissues in my right breast.  Benign again.  Thank God!  I had the surgery and had the duct removed.  I have healed nicely.  I am back to going once a year for my mammograms.

If you have a feeling that you need a mammogram, don't fight it.  Get one.  If you feel lumps, call your doctor and get a mammogram.

My mom was diagnosed on August 8, 2008.  She is one of my many survivors.
