Day 19: Struggles

Welcome to Day 19!
How do you care for your other children when your one child has major health issues?

Over the years, Noah knows more about special needs than a child should at his age.He has seen Ashleigh getting "more attention" and this shows up in negative behavior in Noah.  Over the years Noah has became jealous of his sister.  There is a power struggle between Ashleigh and Noah.  This power struggle has gotten worse in the last several years.  Each Ashleigh and Noah wants to get the other in trouble so they do things that the other would normally do.  It is hard to figure out who did it.  Like last night, someone got into the baking cocoa.  Now this is normally Ashleigh doing this, but I am not sure since we have this power struggle.  Another example is holes appearing in Ashleigh's room and the hallway on the second floor.  This was Noah.

We have told Noah what HSP is, what Autism is, and how his sister is different from other kids her age.  We waited until we felt Noah was old enough and he started asking questions.  I honestly do not remember how old he was when he started asking why Ashleigh does this or that.  One of the struggles I have is explaining what HSP is.  It is a rare disease.  We know no one personally.  How do you explain about a disease that is not well known?  I know the basics.  Neurological disease that is taking away the ability to walk.  Add in Autism and we have a lot more struggles.  Ashleigh is a creature of habit.  When her world becomes too overwhelming, she shows it by crying LOUDLY.  Example would be when Noah's one friend comes over.  Both boys can get pretty loud at times, which affects Ashleigh.  She hides

With Ethan, he is too young to understand everything about Ashleigh's health.  I wonder what will happen when Ethan learns more.  Will he become jealous of the attention that Ashleigh receives?
