Welcome to Day 20!!
I am working on a Part 2 for my Struggles post that I did yesterday, but I want to get it right and it takes a lot out of me. I have a hard time writing about the ugliness we deal with daily.
Today's post I am going to write about the difficulties going on vacation or a trip in a day.
We don't go on many vacations. The last actual vacation we have gone on was in August, 2009. He was in a stroller back then. We did not need a wheelchair like we have to have now. Last year we did not go far. We stayed close to home.
My friend and I like to take trips with our kids (her 2 and my 3). Last year we could not afford to go anywhere besides places an hour from home. Our first trip was to the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. We are in PA and I think we are close to 4 hours away without getting lost and stopping. We did get lost and we of course stopped since we had 5 kids in my van. I made one major mistake in this trip. No wheelchair. I did not have one for Ashleigh and I did not get one from the zoo. If you have been to the Columbus Zoo, you know that it isBIG HUGE especially if you compare this zoo to the one we go to alot. My friend and I were about 45-60 minutes from the gates and realized that we should had gotten one. It was too late to get one now. If one of us went back, then we would have not finished the zoo. The zoo was open that day 10-7p and we were getting to the gift shop almost 7p. This was because we skipped a section of Animals (the monkeys, etc). During this trip, Noah's migraines were showing its ugly head. It was so hot outside (over 105 degrees F) and the sun was so bright that it affected Noah. I learned that anytime we are outside in the sun like that I have to have certain items for Noah. A hat and shades to block the sun. Headache meds just in case. Noah hates to be in the sun too long.
Our second trip was Virginia Beach. This time we had the 7 of us and a friend, who drove almost the entire trip. This trip I did have the wheelchair because I brought one from Walgreens. I did not have noise cancelling headphones for Ashleigh. Besides the beach we went to, we went to the Virginia Zoo, but we had Ashleigh in her wheelchair. We walked the boardwalk and Ashleigh was in her wheelchair.

For any trip that we take Ashleigh on, we have to give her some down time to rest. Normally it is the evening. If we did a lot during the day, then Ashleigh can not handle anything in the evening. Noah needs to have down time, too, if it is hot outside and the sun is too bright. It wears him out.
We have not had a day trip or anything longer since Ethan was diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance. Oh boy! The items I would need for him. I need gluten free snacks and cereal for him. When we travel, I take drinks in a cooler so we can keep the stops down. I would also take 1 medication just in case he needs it.
